Recent Grant and Donations Received for East Asian Collection
The Libraries’ East Asian (EA) Collection, located on the first floor of Langson Library, has received a grant from Korea Foundation under its Support Program for Korean Studies e-Resources, and the first batch of gift books from the National Library of China’s “Window to China” project (中国之窗).
The Korea Foundation grant of $2,780 received earlier this year provides critical matching funds for the Libraries to subscribe to e-Korean Studies, the most comprehensive Korean-language database with online access to journal articles, books, reports, lectures, reference works, and legal information. Available to UCI faculty, staff and students at www.e-koreanstudies.com, the e-resource augments our Korean language collection that supports modern and contemporary Korea studies on campus. Featuring a robust cross-database search capability, e-Korean Studies will make research on Korea much easier and more efficient. To ensure ongoing access, the Libraries plan to continue its application for the grant on an annual basis.
Also, as a result of a successful application in 2010, UCI Libraries has been awarded participation in “Window to China,” a donation program that is currently operated by the National Library of China targeting 100 libraries worldwide outside China. Under the first donation program of its kind from the Chinese government, UCI Libraries is entitled to request each year up to 6,000 Yuan RMB (approximately $900 at the current exchange rate) worth of books, film DVDs, and other forms of research materials about China in Chinese, English or bi-lingual versions. In early 2011, the Libraries received the first batch of 77 gift books (the titles can be viewed at libguides.lib.uci.edu/asian_studies). These materials, covering various humanities and social sciences areas, are being added to the East Asian Collection.
