From the University Librarian

ImageDear colleagues,

The start of the 2017-18 academic year is always an exciting time on campus as students return, new faculty members settle in and the community engages with all UCI has to offer. At the UCI Libraries, we've kicked off the year with great momentum as various projects and programs came to fruition in the early months of the fall quarter.

In the spring edition, we introduced the new Libraries' Space Planning team established to review current uses of library space and develop a forward-looking vision for enhancing the library buildings to meet current and future needs. We are excited to announce that the team, in partnership with Library Facilities and Information Technology, completed work on a new Collaboration Zone located on the third floor of Langson Library.

Equally exciting news for the Libraries comes from a cross-unit team that has been evaluating vendor bids for a new Library Management Systems. The team has decided on a new modern library online search tool called a discovery service.

Throughout the quarter, in various library facilities and across campus, our Communications and Events, Digital Scholarship Services, Special Collections & Archives, and Education and Outreach teams have hosted a wide variety of events, workshops and other programming for faculty, students, staff and community members.

And as teaching, learning and research all ramp up, we've added new databases, hired new Librarians, highlighted faculty at Grunigen Medical Library, expanded our student employees' roles in the Reference department and piloted a Personal Librarian Program for incoming first-year and transfer students.

We are passionate about maintaining this energy for the remainder of the academic year and beyond!
